I had previously picked up a Zoom USB Fax Modem because it says on the box "works with Linux." It didn't. And I had the kernel the label said was needed.
Next I checked with a vendors who build and sell only Linux PCs/laptops.
One recommended I try this fax modem. It worked without a hitch!
The only drawback, IMO, is there is no speaker. If the connection fails, say because I put in a wrong number and dialed a voice line, I don't hear if a person picks up. So I could make multiple attempts and needlessly bother someone because I can't hear that the call is going to a voice line and not a fax machine.
If it had a speaker it would have gotten 5 stars
